Cysts and lipomas are two of the most common lumps found under the skin. Both are usually benign, but they can grow, catch or become uncomfortable, which is when people start to think about removal.
What is the difference?
A cyst is a sac that fills with fluid or keratin and feels firm and round, sometimes with a small central point. A lipoma is a soft, movable lump of fatty tissue that sits deeper and is usually painless. A clinician can often tell them apart on examination.
When removal makes sense
Many are best left alone. Removal is worth considering if a lump is growing, painful, repeatedly inflamed, or in a spot where it catches. Removing it also allows the tissue to be examined if there is any doubt about what it is.
Book an assessment
We assess and, where appropriate, remove cysts, lipomas and similar lumps as part of our skin service. Book a consultation at our Harley Street clinic for a clear opinion. This article is general information and not a diagnosis.
