Receding Hairline

How to tell a maturing hairline from real recession, and how the hairline is rebuilt.

Finance available on the full cost, 0% APR up to £2,000 with Klarna (subject to status)

A receding hairline is one of the earliest and most noticeable signs of pattern hair loss, usually starting at the temples and the corners. It is worth distinguishing from a maturing hairline, which is a normal, slight backward shift in the late teens and twenties that then stays put.

Where recession is genuine and progressing, a hair transplant can rebuild and redesign the hairline, and good design is what makes it look natural.

Hairline planning at a Harley Street assessment
The hairline shape is designed with you before any treatment.

How is a hairline designed?

Hairline design is as much art as surgery. We plan a shape and height that suits your face and age rather than the lowest possible line, place single hairs at the leading edge for a soft, natural front, and angle the grafts to match your natural growth. A hairline set too low or too straight is the giveaway of an unnatural result.

How many grafts for a receding hairline?

Rebuilding a hairline and temples commonly needs somewhere around 1,500 to 2,500 grafts, depending on how far it has receded and the density you want. We confirm the number after assessing your donor area, and plan for the future so a good result now does not look odd as any native hair changes.

What causes a receding hairline?

In most men a receding hairline is the first sign of male pattern loss, driven by DHT sensitivity at the temples and front. It can also be worsened by traction from tight styling. Telling a maturing hairline, which is normal with age, from a genuinely receding one is something we assess carefully, because it changes whether treatment is needed.

Can the temples and corners be rebuilt?

Yes, and they matter more than people expect: the temple points frame the face and are what make a hairline read as natural rather than drawn on. Restoring them takes careful angling and single-follicle work at the very front, which is where an experienced hand shows.

Who is this for?

Frequently asked questions

Is my hairline maturing or receding?

A maturing hairline shifts back slightly and evenly in your late teens or twenties, then settles. A receding hairline keeps moving back, often deeper at the temples, and may come with thinning behind it. If it is progressing rather than stable, it is worth an assessment.

How low can the hairline go?

Technically low, but that is rarely wise. A natural hairline suits your facial proportions and age, and one placed too low can look unnatural as you get older and use up donor hair better kept in reserve. We design a hairline that still looks right in decades to come.

Will a restored hairline look natural?

When it is designed well and grafts are angled correctly, yes. Naturalness comes from the shape, a soft irregular leading edge of single hairs, and correct angles, not just density. Because the hair is your own, it grows and can be styled normally.

Should I treat a receding hairline early?

There is a balance. Treating too early, while loss is still moving, risks needing more surgery later. But an experienced surgeon can design a hairline that allows for future change, so early treatment is sometimes right. We advise on timing honestly rather than operating on request.

Will a restored hairline recede again?

The transplanted hairs are taken from DHT-resistant areas, so they keep growing. However, your own untransplanted hair behind them can still thin, which is why the design plans for the future. Supporting the existing hair can help protect the overall look.
