Functional medicine looks at how the body’s systems work together and tries to understand why symptoms are happening, not just to label them. It suits people with ongoing issues such as fatigue, gut symptoms, hormonal imbalance or low mood, where they want a thorough, joined-up assessment.

Our approach is evidence-informed and honest. We take a detailed history, use appropriate testing, and build a personalised plan around nutrition, lifestyle and, where needed, medical treatment. We are clear about what the evidence supports and what it does not, and we work alongside conventional care rather than replacing it.

What is functional medicine?

It is an approach that looks for the underlying drivers of symptoms, diet, sleep, stress, gut health, hormones and more, and how they interact, rather than treating each symptom in isolation. The aim is a plan that addresses causes and supports long-term health.

It complements conventional medicine. Serious conditions are still investigated and treated in the usual way, and we refer on where that is the right thing to do.

What can functional medicine help with?

People often come with persistent fatigue, digestive symptoms, hormonal or metabolic concerns, stress and sleep problems, or a general sense of not feeling well despite normal routine tests. A structured assessment can uncover contributing factors that a short standard appointment may miss.

How does the process work?

It starts with a long first consultation to map your history and symptoms, followed by any relevant testing. From there we agree a realistic, staged plan, then review and adjust it over time. We keep expectations honest and grounded in evidence throughout.

Frequently asked questions

Is functional medicine evidence-based?

The best functional-medicine practice is grounded in evidence and works alongside conventional care. We are clear about what is well supported and what is more preliminary, and we do not make guarantees. Serious conditions are always investigated and treated conventionally.

Will functional medicine replace my usual doctor?

No. It complements your GP and specialist care rather than replacing it. We coordinate with your other doctors where helpful, and refer you on when a concern needs conventional investigation or treatment.

What happens at the first appointment?

The first appointment is longer than usual, so we can take a detailed history of your health, symptoms, lifestyle and goals. We then agree which tests, if any, are worthwhile before building a personalised plan together.
