A dermatofibroma is a small, firm lump in the skin, most often on the legs or arms. They are very common, harmless, and usually painless, though they can occasionally itch or feel tender when knocked.
How to recognise one
Dermatofibromas feel like a hard little button under the skin and often dimple inward when the skin around them is pinched. They can be pink, brown or reddish, and they tend to stay the same size for years.
Do they need removing?
Usually not. Because they sit within the skin, removal leaves a scar, so it is only worth it if a lump is symptomatic or in a spot that is always being caught. As with any lump, a new or changing one is worth having checked to confirm what it is.
