Melasma: Managing Stubborn Pigmentation

Melasma is a common form of pigmentation that appears as brown or greyish patches, usually across the cheeks, forehead and upper lip. It is harmless but can be stubborn and disheartening, and it needs a careful, patient approach rather than a quick fix.

What causes melasma?

It is driven by a combination of sun exposure, hormones and genetics, which is why it often appears or worsens with pregnancy, the contraceptive pill or time in the sun. Heat and light are strong triggers, so it can be persistent.

What can help

Diligent, daily sun protection is the single most important step, both to improve melasma and to stop it returning. Beyond that, a gentle, consistent skincare and treatment plan can help even the tone over time. Aggressive treatment can sometimes make melasma worse, so it is approached carefully.
