The lines that run from the sides of the nose to the corners of the mouth are the nasolabial folds. Everyone has them to some degree, but they deepen with age as the face loses support, and many people ask how they can be softened.
Why they deepen
They become more pronounced as the cheeks lose volume and the skin loses firmness, so the fold is often as much about what is happening in the cheek above as the line itself. That is why treating the fold in isolation rarely gives the most natural result.
What can help
Restoring a little support to the mid-face, and where appropriate softening the fold itself, can improve the area while keeping the face balanced. The key is assessing the whole face rather than chasing one line. We would always rather do less and keep it natural.
