A sebaceous cyst is a smooth, round lump under the skin, most often found on the scalp, face, neck or back. They are usually harmless, but they can grow, become tender, or occasionally get inflamed, which is when removal becomes worth considering.
What causes them?
These cysts form when a sac fills with keratin, the same protein found in skin and hair. They can develop after a blocked follicle or minor skin injury. Squeezing them tends to make matters worse and risks infection.
When to remove one
Removal is sensible if a cyst is growing, uncomfortable, repeatedly inflamed, or in a spot where it catches. Removing the whole sac in one piece gives the best chance of it not returning, which is why a clinical approach beats home attempts.
