Seborrhoeic Keratoses: Harmless Warty Growths

Seborrhoeic keratoses are one of the most common skin growths, and one of the most commonly worried about. They are benign, but their slightly warty, stuck on appearance and dark colour can make people fear the worst.

What they look like

They are raised, rough or waxy patches that can be tan, brown or almost black. They often look as though they could be picked off, and they tend to appear from middle age onward, sometimes in numbers on the back, chest or face.

Do they need treating?

Medically, no. They are harmless. People choose to have them removed for comfort where they catch, or simply because they dislike the look. Because a very dark growth can occasionally be confused with something that does need attention, it is always sensible to have a new or changing one checked first.

We assess and, where wanted, remove seborrhoeic keratoses and similar growths as part of our skin service. Book a consultation at our Harley Street clinic for a clear opinion. This article is general information and not a diagnosis.
