Skin Laxity: When Skin Loses Its Firmness

As we age, skin gradually loses the firmness and bounce it had in youth. This is skin laxity, and it shows as a softening along the jaw, looser skin on the neck and a general loss of tautness. It is a normal part of ageing, and there is plenty that can help.

Why skin loses firmness

Firmness comes from collagen and elastin in the skin, which decline with age and are broken down further by sun exposure and lifestyle. As they reduce, the skin has less support and begins to loosen, particularly around the lower face and neck.

What can help

Treatments that support skin quality and stimulate the skin can improve firmness and tone, and protecting your collagen with good sun habits slows the decline. For more advanced laxity, an honest assessment is important, because non-surgical treatments have limits and we would rather be clear about them.
