Flat brown patches that appear on the face, hands and other sun-exposed areas are usually sun spots, also called age spots or solar lentigines. They are harmless, but they are one of the clearest signs of accumulated sun exposure.
What causes them?
They form where years of ultraviolet light have prompted the skin to produce extra pigment in concentrated spots. That is why they appear on the areas most exposed to the sun and tend to become more noticeable with age.
What can help?
Daily sun protection is the foundation, both to prevent new spots and to stop existing ones darkening. Beyond that, skin rejuvenation approaches can help even out tone and brightness. Because a changing pigmented spot occasionally needs assessing, we always check before treating.
