Types of Hair Loss Explained

“Hair loss” covers several different conditions, and knowing which type you have shapes what can be done about it. Here is a clear guide to the main patterns we see.

Pattern hair loss

The most common type is androgenetic, or pattern, hair loss: a gradual, inherited thinning that in men recedes at the temples and crown, and in women shows as widening at the parting. It is progressive, which is why planning ahead matters.

Other patterns

Telogen effluvium is a temporary, diffuse shed triggered by stress, illness or hormonal change, and it usually recovers. Alopecia areata causes patchy loss and is different again. Traction alopecia comes from tight styling over time. Because the right approach depends entirely on the type, accurate identification comes first. This is general information, not a diagnosis.
