Finding more hair in the brush or the plughole is unsettling, and the first useful step is understanding why it is happening. Hair loss has several distinct causes, and they are not all permanent.
The most common causes
The commonest is pattern hair loss, an inherited, gradual thinning at the hairline or crown driven by genetics and hormones. Beyond that, hair sheds after physical or emotional stress, illness, childbirth, rapid weight change, thyroid problems and low iron. Some of these are temporary and reverse once the trigger passes.
Why the cause matters
Because temporary shedding and permanent pattern loss look similar early on but are treated very differently, guessing is unhelpful. A proper assessment, sometimes with simple blood tests, identifies what is actually happening before any treatment or surgery is considered. This information is educational and not a diagnosis.
